Shipping Sites
TV programmes such as Shipping Wars have increased the profile of “reverse-auction” style sites like www.shiply.com and www.uship.com At Parcel Zone we are experiencing increasing amounts of confusion and frustration from the users of these sites. The idea behind these sites is great, but we feel they could be more transparent about the way they do business.
Many of the sites do not make their users aware of their fee structure, instead misleading them into believing that they pay no fee to the website and that the “deposit” they are required to pay goes to the shipper.
To clear up the confusion here are some key points to bear in mind when using such sites:
1. The site itself does not provide any shipping services. It is merely a marketplace, much the same as eBay.
2. The “deposit” fee that the site charges to give the subscriber access to the shippers contact details goes straight to the site. The shipper sees no part of this, so it is not in fact a deposit in the usual sense.
3. Paying a “deposit” through the site only obliges the shipping company to provide the specific service you have requested at that price. If weights or volumes vary, or if dates or collection/delivery requirements change, the shipping company is perfectly entitled to vary the rate quoted.
4. You have no way of knowing which company you will be dealing with until AFTER you have paid the deposit to the site. This is a fundamental principle of these sites. There’s no point asking the shipping companies to give you their details prior to having paid the deposit – the site won’t allow it and the user will be banned.
5. Most shipping companies on these sites will be using 3rd parties to do the shipping. Before you pay a deposit ask yourself – is it realistic that these guys are going to collect my item and PERSONALLY deliver it to the other side of the world for €60? There’s nothing wrong with this model, It works very well, but we find many customers are surprised that the driver who collects their item in a van in Dublin will not be the same guy who delivers it 4 days later in a remote village somewhere in the Australian Outback!

In a small market like Ireland, it won’t take long to Google most or all the shipping service providers in the market, and send each one an email detailing your requirements and requesting a quote. By contacting them directly, you will be getting the best price, as there is no “middleman” taking a cut. You can compare services like for like, and there will be no obligation if you change your mind, and no penalty if you vary your shipment.
